Carefully Consider Travel Plans

Given the evolving landscape around immigration policy and enforcement priorities, we encourage international community members including temporary U.S. visa holders and lawful permanent residents (or 鈥済reen card holders鈥�) to聽carefully consider whether your discretionary international travel, either personal, academic, or professional, is necessary, at this time.聽

Potential changes in immigration policy and enforcement priorities, such as travel restrictions and travel bans, may affect temporary visa holders鈥� 聽ability to return to the United States as planned. 聽聽The University wants to advise members of 聽AU鈥檚 international community to exercise caution when planning international travel until further clarity regarding immigration and enforcement priorities is available.聽

International community members should evaluate their personal situation, responsibilities while abroad, and any added risks that may arise before finalizing travel plans.

Follow University Travel Policies

All university-related international travel must be pre-approved and registered in accordance with the University鈥檚 Domestic and International Travel Policy. Personal travel is not registered with the University, but we recommend that you share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member.聽

Study Abroad program approval and registration are coordinated by each program鈥檚 sponsoring academic unit. Individual or group international travel is approved and registered following Office of Global Safety procedures. The Office of Global Safety is responsible for assessing risk at international travel destinations for university-related travel.

Individuals planning university-related international travel should consider any potential risks related to their destination country and consult AU鈥檚 Office of Global Safety with specific questions or concerns.

Prepare Your Technology for International Travel

We recommend that before traveling abroad, you should take proactive measures to protect sensitive/confidential 聽data from being stolen, hacked, disclosed, inspected or lost. For example, do you have student records subject to FERPA on your device? Do you have research data on your device which is subject to security measures required by the external funder or subject to state or federal regulations? Does the locality to which you are traveling have restrictions on accessing certain on-line resources? Sensitive/confidential material should be securely backed up before travel and stored in a safe location at home.

When making travel plans, consider the restrictions imposed on US-based cloud service providers regarding embargoed or sanctioned countries and regions. Due to these restrictions, certain university applications, 聽such as Duo 聽(multi-factor authentication), Canvas and Zoom may not be accessible to AU travelers in these areas.
